Lynn Chadwick

1914 Born 24 November at Ivy Cottage, Station Road, Barnes, London

1926-32 Attends Merchant Taylors’ School, London. Art master encourages him to draw and use watercolours and oils

1933-9 Trains and works as a draughtsman in various architectural firms in London and in 1937 joins Rodney Thomas architects; attends evening classes in architecture with a view to qualifying as an architect but soon abandons this idea

1941-4 Volunteers for the Royal Navy. Marries Charlotte Secord in 1942, and first child, Simon, is born. Qualifies as a pilot and is commissioned

1944-6 Resumes work with Rodney Thomas, specializing in exhibition design

1946 Moves to Fisher’s Cottage, near Edge, Stroud, Gloucestershire, on estate of architect Detmar Blow. Makes his first mobile, developed from ideas of moving sculptural objects proposed by Rodney Thomas

1949-50 Makes small mobile for window of Gimpel, Fils, London, where he shows in a mixed exhibition. Also exhibits with the London Group. First solo exhibition, at Gimpel Fils, London (June). Takes summer course in welding – Geoffrey Clarke is a fellow pupil

1951 South Bank Exhibition as part of Festival of Britain. The Fisheater mobile (51), commissioned by the Arts Council, is shown at RBA Galleries

1952 Included in British Council’s New Aspects of British Sculpture exhibition for the XXVI Biennale, Venice. Member of London Group

1953 Produces first solid sculptures. One of 12 semi-finalists in The Unknown Political Prisoner International Sculpture Competition organized by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London

1956 Wins International Prize for Sculpture at the XXVIII Biennale, Venice

1958 Moves to Lypiatt Park, near Stroud, Gloucestershire

1959 Wins first prize, III Concorso Internazionale del Bronzetto, Padua. Divorces first wife and marries Frances Jamieson (daughters, Sarah and Sophie)

1960 Signs two-year contract with Marlborough Fine Art, London

1962 Prize-winner at VII Esposizione di Biano e Nero, Lugano

1964 Appointed CBE. Second wife Frances dies. Represented in London Group 1914-64 Jubilee Exhibition (though no longer a member). Elected member of the Accademia di San Luca, Rome, and of the Accademia Fiorentina delle Arti e Disegno, Florence. Marries Éva Reiner (one son, Daniel)

1971 Opens own foundry at Lypiatt Park

1986 Acquires large warehouse near Lypiatt, which he equips as workshop and sculpture store

1988 Invited by director of XLIII Venice Biennale to show bronze Back to Venice (C74) in international sculpture survey

1989 Begins to place sculpture in Toadsmoor Valley, adjoining Lypiatt Park. Closes foundry and appoints Rungwe Kingdon of Pangolin Editions to cast all his work

1993 Created Commandeur, Ordre des Arts et Lettres, France

2003 Dies 25 April and is buried at Lypiatt Park

2004 Posthumously awarded The Goldhill Award for Sculpture, Royal Academy of Arts
