Description

It was included in the Martha Jackson Gallery exhibition in New York, 1973, with the title given above. It is mentioned in a letter to Scott dated 14 November 1973 from Gimpel & Hanover Galerie, Zurich, listing the paintings the gallery had sent to Walter Moos in Toronto.

It is one of a series of four works, each measuring 50 x 40 inches, and each with the title Strong Note followed by the name of a colour. The series was painted for the exhibition at Martha Jackson Gallery in 1973 (See Strong Note Pale Blue, cat. No. 730, Strong Note Brown, cat. No 731, and Strong Note White, cat. No. 732).

The present work was later returned to the artist and passed to Mary Scott who gave it to the collectors who owned it at the time of writing.
